Best Underwater Cameras for Snorkeling
In recent history, it was much harder to take underwater photographs than it is nowadays. Not everybody had the necessary equipment to take good pictures of fish, corals, and other underwater scenery you'd want to preserve for your scrapbook and to share with your friends and family.
The good news is these days are over! Nowadays, there are many fairly inexpensive underwater cameras that take much better underwater pictures than they did back in the "good old days"!
You can buy cameras that are disposable, and you can buy digital cameras that are waterproof, shock proof, dust proof, ... (you get the point).
The following waterproof cameras are the best available on Amazon (the online store), so if you want to jump in the amazon river for some photo shooting with these cameras, go right ahead! :D
The Pentax Optio WG-3
The Pentax Option WG3 is definitely one of the best underwater cameras on the market. This camera is a favorite among many outdoor enthusiasts and is perfect for snorkeling.
It's grippy rubber that surround the outside edges make for easy grasping. this is especially important when taking pictures underwater because things tends to get a bit slippery when wet.
How deep can you take this camera? With it's watertight construction, you shouldn't have a problem taking high-quality photos of up to 16.79mp at 45 feet in depth. Assuming you want the camera mainly for snorkeling, this is more than enough!
What other things can it do besides taking high-quality pictures underwater? Turns out to be a lot! You see, this camera isn't made solely for water enthusiasts, but also for just about any outdoor activity. It can survive freezing temperatures, drops of up to 6 feet, and just about anything else you can think of. You're going to have to want to break this camera to do so!
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5A
If the WG-3 camera is the best, the Panasonic DMC-TS5A waterproof camera is right behind his heels. With a waterproof depth of 39 feet, it cannot withstand quite as much water pressure as the previous camera.
However, unless you have a snorkel that is more than 40 feet in length, you should be able to take great high - quality underwater pictures.
Besides being waterproof, it is also shock-proof, dust proof, and freezeproof, making it also an ideal camera for fishing, camping, hiking, and any other outdoor activity that require a camera that will withstand the harsh abuse of a outdoor lifestyle.
Nikon AW110
As far as the depth at which you can take a camera into water is concerned, this camera is definitely number 1. It's maximum underwater depth is an astounding 59 feet, and that 10 feet more than the wg-3.
So if you're planning on doing a bit more with your camera underwater than just snorkeling, than this would be a top-of-the-line product to consider.
The Nikon AW110 also takes excellent pictures. With features that help take sharp photos of fast moving objects, the ability to take pictures with an image resolution of 16 megapixels, and a 5x maximum zoom capability, this camera is hard to beat.
The only reason I still believe the WG-3 is better for the outdoors is because it more rugged than the AW110. However, depending on how you're going to use the camera (i.e. birding instead of mountain climbing or snorkeling instead scuba diving) this is one you may want to take into consideration.
Canon Powershot D20
The Canon Powershot D20 is a very great camera that has every reason to be listed here. While this camera is only waterproof up to a depth of 33 feet, it still has all the notable features of other high quality underwater cameras.
Probably the most notable thing about this camera is its amazingly long battery life. This camera can take 280 pictures on a single charge, (which if you're like my sister who snaps pictures every 5 seconds, the battery won't last long regardless how large a battery you have!) which is the most I could find thus far!
